Patient Monitoring Meters
Portable monitoring systems based on electrochemical measurement, giving a result from a single drop of blood.
This group serves a different need from laboratory analyzers: measuring a single parameter quickly, cheaply and repeatably. Primary care centres, occupational health, screening programmes and patient follow-up are typical settings.
Two questions drive the choice: how many parameters will be measured, and how often. Where several parameters are measured regularly, multi-monitoring systems reduce device count; for a single parameter, single-function series are more economical on strip cost.

- Number of parameters
- Multi-monitoring systems combine glucose, total cholesterol and uric acid on one device. For a single parameter, the Uni or Premium series is more suitable on both device and strip cost.
- Measurement time
- This varies by parameter: glucose returns a result in about 5 seconds, uric acid in 15 and total cholesterol in 26. In busy screening programmes this difference affects total time.
- Strip management
- Automatic strip recognition selects the measurement mode from the strip inserted, reducing user error. Because strips carry expiry dates, stock should be planned against consumption.
- Ketone and hemoglobin needs
- β-ketone measurement requires a separate series; hematocrit correction reduces red blood cell interference. For hemoglobin, models working from 1.0 µL of sample are available.
- Where it will be used
- Fixed unit or field use? For field work, device durability, battery life and strip storage conditions should be assessed separately.

- Which parameters can be measured?
- Multi-monitoring systems measure glucose, total cholesterol and uric acid. The Knight series measures β-ketone (BHB), or glucose together with ketone, and calculates the glucose–ketone index automatically. The Uni Hemoglobin and Hb models measure hemoglobin.
