POCT does not replace the central laboratory; it steps in where the decision cannot wait. An antibiotic decision in primary care, triage in the emergency department, treatment monitoring in a diabetes clinic — results arriving within minutes let the patient be directed within the same visit.
Selection is driven by the test menu and sample preparation. Platforms running several parameters on one reader remove the need for a separate device per test, saving both space and investment in smaller units.

- Is a single parameter or a panel required? Multi-parameter platforms run different tests on the same reader by changing the kit, with no need for additional instruments.
- Sample type and preparation
- Tests running from whole blood without centrifugation can be used in units with no laboratory infrastructure. Tests requiring serum or plasma create an additional equipment need.
- Sample volume
- Low-volume tests that work from a fingerstick are an advantage where venous blood cannot be drawn and in paediatrics. Microlitre-level volumes provide this flexibility.
- Portability
- Units without fixed laboratory space, mobile health services and field work require compact readers that can run on battery.
- Test kit continuity
- In POCT, continuity lives in the kit; without it the instrument is unusable. Because kits carry expiry dates, stock must be planned against consumption and lots tracked.

Portable POCT reader for the full NycoCard test range. Works on a reflectometry principle, consisting of an instrument box and a reader pen, and can run on battery.

Test kit for quantitative C-reactive protein in whole blood, serum or plasma. Provides a rapid result for assessing infection and inflammation.
