The questions we are asked most often about analyzer selection, test menus and reagents.

3-part analyzers separate leukocytes into three subpopulations (lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes). 5-part systems report five: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. Because they provide a more detailed differential, 5-part analyzers are preferred in medium and high-volume laboratories.

The deciding factors are daily test volume, target turnaround time and sample type. Compact bench-top systems cover up to roughly 150 patients per day, while above 500 patients automated sample loading and redundancy become necessary. Running CRP or ESR on the same instrument also changes the capacity plan.

Compare hematology analyzers

A core hemostasis menu covers PT/INR, aPTT, fibrinogen and thrombin time. Depending on the instrument class, specialty assays such as D-Dimer, antithrombin, Protein C and Protein S, and dRVVT can be added. Semi-automatic systems suit small laboratories; fully automated analyzers handle higher workloads.

Throughput per hour, availability of an ISE module, continuous sample and reagent loading, open or closed reagent systems, and LIS connectivity are the deciding factors. Compact bench-top analyzers with an ISE module can deliver more than 400 tests per hour.

POCT means testing performed next to the patient rather than sending the sample to a laboratory. Results arrive within minutes, whole blood is typically used and centrifugation is not required. It does not replace central laboratory testing; it complements it where a fast decision is needed.

Four tests run on a single reader: CRP, HbA1c, D-Dimer and U-Albumin (microalbuminuria). The instrument is portable and battery powered; depending on the kit, tests can be run from whole blood, serum or plasma. No separate device is needed per parameter.

Yes. Blood cell size and distribution vary between animal species, so the instrument must hold species-specific calibration profiles. Veterinary analyzers run with separately tuned profiles for species such as cat, dog, horse, cattle and sheep.

Analyzers are validated together with the manufacturer's reagents and calibrators. Third-party reagents can affect measurement accuracy, quality control results and, in most cases, the instrument warranty. Original reagents also satisfy record-keeping requirements for lot traceability and control material compatibility.
