Clinical Chemistry Analyzers
The HORIBA Medical clinical chemistry range, from semi-automatic instruments to floor-standing analyzers, measuring molecules and electrolytes in serum, plasma, urine, body fluids and whole blood.
Clinical chemistry carries the widest test menu in the laboratory, which is why looking at hourly capacity alone is misleading. What matters is the number of onboard assays, whether an ISE module is present, and whether the reagent system is open or closed.
HORIBA's clinical chemistry line consists of two series: the established Pentra C range and the newer Yumizen C range. Coverage extends from a single-purpose electrolyte analyzer to cassette-format systems with 55 onboard assays.
Selection criteria
- Number of onboard assays
- How many tests can stay loaded at once determines how often reagents are swapped during the day. In laboratories running a wide menu this can matter more than hourly throughput.
- ISE module
- An ISE module is needed for sodium, potassium and chloride. If it is not integrated, a separate electrolyte analyzer should be planned; the Yumizen E60 covers this in 60 seconds per sample.
- Continuous sample and reagent loading
- Being able to add samples and reagents without stopping the run visibly speeds up uninterrupted routines. In units that work in batches this feature is less critical.
- Open or closed reagent system
- Closed systems offer validated reagent–instrument compatibility and less method verification work. Open systems give flexibility in reagent sourcing but move validation responsibility to the laboratory.
- Range of sample types
- Handling urine, CSF, whole blood and body fluids alongside serum and plasma widens the menu. Semi-automatic models that also cover coagulation reduce instrument count in small laboratories.

Frequently asked questions
- What should I look for when choosing a clinical chemistry analyzer?
- Throughput per hour, number of onboard assays, availability of an ISE module, continuous sample and reagent loading, and open versus closed reagent systems are the deciding factors. LIS connectivity should also be confirmed as part of installation.
- What is the difference between the Yumizen C and Pentra C series?
- The Pentra C range is the established line; the Pentra C400 offers 55 onboard assays with cassette-format reagents, while the Pentra C200 is a compact bench-top model. The Yumizen C range is newer and spans scales from the floor-standing C560 to the compact C230.
- Is a separate instrument needed for electrolytes?
- Not if the analyzer has an ISE module. Where there is no module, or where the electrolyte workload is managed separately, an electrolyte analyzer such as the Yumizen E60 is used; it measures sodium, potassium, chloride or calcium and runs three parameters simultaneously.
- Is a semi-automatic instrument enough for a small laboratory?
- It is, where daily test volume is limited. Because the Yumizen CA40 runs PT and aPTT in addition to chemistry and immunoturbidimetry, it can also reduce the need for a separate coagulation instrument in small laboratories.
- How are reagents and calibrators supplied?
- The Yumizen C series works with the POINTE reagent family and the Pentra C series with CP-format reagents. We set up scheduled shipments of reagents, calibrators and control materials based on your consumption.
