In most laboratories, choosing a hematology analyzer comes down to three questions: how many samples are run per day, whether a 3-part or 5-part differential is required, and whether additional parameters such as CRP or ESR should run on the same instrument. Once these are settled, the shortlist narrows quickly.

Compact systems work from 10 µL of whole blood and fit into small units without a space problem. Upper-segment instruments add NRBC, immature leukocyte populations and automated rule packages to the 5-part differential, reducing the need for manual review.

Selection criteria

3-part or 5-part
3-part systems separate leukocytes into lymphocytes, monocytes and granulocytes. 5-part instruments report neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils separately, reducing manual smear review on abnormal results.
Daily test volume
A capacity of 50–60 tests per hour covers units running a few dozen patients a day. Above 80 samples per hour automated loading becomes relevant, and around 120 samples per hour conveyor automation enters the picture.
CRP or ESR integration
Running CRP simultaneously with the differential removes the need for a separate POCT device. Models with CoRA technology report ESR from the same sample and instrument as the blood count.
Sample mode and volume
Open-tube models offer flexibility at low volume; closed-tube and rack models improve sample safety and workflow speed. Micro-sampling instruments are an advantage for paediatric and difficult samples.
Reagent cost and LIS connectivity
Instrument price is only part of total cost of ownership; reagent consumption and control material spend define the annual budget. Whether LIS/HIS connectivity is included in the installation should be confirmed separately.

What is the difference between a 3-part and a 5-part hematology analyzer?

Can ESR be measured on the hematology analyzer?

Which analyzer suits a laboratory running 200 patients a day?
At this volume, bench-top 5-part systems with a capacity of 60–80 tests per hour are generally sufficient. If the workload is concentrated in peak hours or the STAT load is high, moving one capacity step up prevents queuing.
How is original reagent supply handled?
We supply the instrument's reagents, calibrators and control materials on a scheduled plan based on your consumption. Third-party reagents can affect measurement accuracy, quality control results and, in most cases, the instrument warranty.
